ART COLLECTOR’S PENTHOUSE

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

SCOPE

Bureau Braun was approached by a San Francisco Real Estate Broker to complete a marketing package for a landmark apartment in the City’s famed Pacific Heights Neighborhood. Originally the home of the Hass Family, of Levi Strauss fame, the apartment has only twice changed hands since the apartment house was completed in 1926. The full-floor apartment was originally two separate units that were combined to create the unique home.

PROPOSAL

In order to unify the impressive home, Bureau Braun studied the pre-war, New York apartment houses of architects Rosario Candela and James Carpenter for inspiration in creating a grand yet inviting plan. As a result, we proposed “the Gallery,” an approximately 10’-0” W by 65’-0” L barrel-vaulted entry corridor that would connect the two polar living areas of the home, while also serving as the stage for the owner’s large-scale art collection.

The material palette and concept came directly from the owner’s art collection: each of the rooms was designed with a single art piece in mind. The home, in this sense, became a living gallery.
